Bible Review: NKJV Word Study Bible

I received a digital version of this Bible, so this review will not include any details about the physical binding of the Bible. The Nelson NKJV Word Study Bible includes very brief word studies of 1,700 key words throughout the Old and New Testament of the New King James text. The introduction says that there is at least one word study per chapter of the Bible with more in most chapters. There are 929 chapters in the Bible, so if you divide the 1,700 word studies evenly – which they do not … [Read more...]

My Favorite Bibles

I get asked for Bible recommendations a lot. In this post, I'll go through a few of my favorite Bibles with links to where you can get more detailed information about them. A Note About Study Bibles: Generally speaking, I don't like Study Bibles. The designation, "Study Bible," usually refers to a Bible that has commentator's notes included with the text. Sometimes those notes are very good but sometimes they are very bad and misleading. It's very important to be careful with these kinds of … [Read more...]

Is The Bible For Everyone?

Jesus said, in what we call the great invitation, “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light” (Matt. 11:28-30). While there are many lessons we can draw from that great text, the one most relevant to the question, “Is the Bible for everyone?,” is that Jesus said “all” could come to Him, “all” could … [Read more...]

Here is the reading plan I prepared for the Jerseyville church of Christ to read in 2013. I'll be preaching my PM lessons in 2013 from this reading plan. That is, the Sunday PM lessons will come from texts of the previous week's reading. So, if you're following the reading plan, you'll hear a lesson from what you've read the previous week every Sunday evening. [  ] January 01, 2013 Gen … [Read more...]

Debate: The Place Of The Gospels In The Bible

The title of this debate might not be very clear at first because most of us, I think, know right were the Gospels are in our Bible. They are right after that page that says "The New Testament Of Jesus Christ." That is where I believe they are supposed to be. They are part of the New Covenant Scriptures and, rightly, begin the New Testament record. Most of you reading this are probably thinking, "well where else would they go?" That will be the topic of discussion for this debate. Let me set … [Read more...]

The Bible And America’s Godly Heritage

This was the Bible class lesson for Wednesday, July 4, 2012, for the Jerseyville church of Christ. There is no doubt about the fact that the Founding Fathers of the United States of America were deeply religious people who formed our government on biblical principles. How Do We Know The Bible Is From God?

All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work (2 Tim. 3:16-17). The Bible is unlike any other book in existence. While many books make the claim to be from a divine source, only the Bible contains within itself the proof to support that claim. This lessons examines just some of that abundance of evidence for the inspiration … [Read more...]
